Briza - Quaking Grass
These are distinctive and beautiful grasses with a trembling panicle and attractive spikelets.
Briza media - Quaking Grass. This is by far the commonest grass, but is still uncommon and always a delight to see. The ligule is a 4 - 6.5 mm long, rounded membrane. The spikelets are triangular to round 3 - 5.5mm long.
Briza maxima - Greater Quaking Grass. This is usually a garden escape and is a larger plant. Unlike Briza media it is an annual and so there are no vegetative shoots, all the stems have flowers. The ligule is shorter, 3 - 3.5mm, but the spikelets are longer, oblong 13 - 20mm long.
