Lonicera species - Honeysuckles
Climbers with flowers and fruit in sessile terminal whorls.
Lonicera periclymenum - Honeysuckle. Commonest All leaves separate and not fused. Red berry. Cultivars have more purple in the flowers.
Lonicera caprifolium - Perforate Honeysuckle. At least the topmost leaves are joined at base round the stem. Orange berry. Bracteole at base of flower missing or minute.
Lonicera x italica - Garden Honeysuckle is like L. caprifolium but has 1mm bracteole obscuring ovary
Lonicera tatarica - Tartarian Honeysuckle
Shrubs with flowers in leaf axils. Not climbing or twining.
Lonicera nitida - Wilson’s Honeysuckle. This is a widely planted evergreen shrub to 1.8m. Leaves 6-16mm ovate with rounded to sub-cordate base. Flowers in pairs in leaf axils 5-7mm cream. Violet berry.
Lonicera pileata - Box-leaved Honeysuckle is also widely planted and is an evergreen shrub to 1m. Leaves 12-32 mm narrowly oblong elliptical with cuneate base. They have a raised midrib on the upper side.. Flowers in pairs in leaf axils 6-8mm cream. Violet berry.
